I was walking up from Silver Beach with Lynn M. when we saw Bucko and Wulffie waiting patio tables at the newly opened Zitta's at the Depot (Editors Note: Zitta's was originally located uptown where Main Street meets Niles Ave). Bucko told me to get a job bussing tables and the Kay hired me on the spot. The rest is burger history.
Working with Kay and Ray-zer, Jeff and Leanne (who fell in love @ Zitta's), Molly, Blasey, Rosser, Brown, Petey, the two above and the Grill master Alex Caban was great. Alex is IMHO the best burger chef on the planet! He held court for many years at the Silver Dollar after that and he made the best burgers then as well. He is 'my favorite American' and a good friend.
Zitta's won the Burger Tour the first couple years it was held and Kay relished her victories. P and I would often go back to Zitta's for a victory round of icy cold Labatt Blues. The coveted bronzed ketchup and mustard trophy awarded as the winner of the Burger Tour is modeled after the condiment bottles at Zitta's.
Having eaten litterly hundreds of Zitta's burgers of various design and having hand scooped about the same number of shakes/malts there, I can say that it was the best burger joint in the area.
More Zitta's history and a disection of its burger prowess sometime soon...
